Six Weeks Down

20.11.15
Today marks the last day of my six week surgery rotation.
Next time that will happen is intern year.

Sure we learned something the last few weeks,
but what stuck with me is their lifestyle.

The surgeon.

The casual 12 hour shifts.
Eight 24hr shifts a month to add to those 12 hour shifts.
And the on call shifts to add to those shifts.
Peace. Out. Life.

When a resident says that her longest work week was 120 hours and still sounds cheerful.
I don't think I am that person.
And another says the longest surgery he was ever in was 11 hours.
I'm not that person either.

In the beginning you definitely can't pick and choose.
I do not want to give them 6 years of my life before I have any say in my work.
...

The thing I thought I wanted to be.
Something I would probably be good at.

No matter how exciting and interesting and life saving it may be.
I also want a life that is not in the hospital.

I want to love my job, but I don't want that to be the only thing I have to love.

I guess this marks the beginning of the confusion that is going to be choosing my path in life.
