All I need was a perfect morning.
Flawless weather.
The storm had passed.
Walked to work. Walking always makes me happy.
Thankful that I live in Europe.
Work was full of experiences. The day was filled with so many moments, where you are simply left with nothing to say.
Example number one..
Sweet old lady had just come out of her hip surgery and I was coming along to drop her off to intensive care. On our way the drains got tugged a left a little path of blood behind us. In the process of fixing this problem her leg was being lifted, tugged and turned. I stopped, her face was the epitome of pain. I told the anesthesiologist and continued by asking her what was wrong. Her response was "my daughter died a week ago today." No one expects that. I continued to hold her hand as most ignored what she had said. Just a day in the hospital for them.
Example 2..
Doing the blood draw round after surgery I came upon a patient with Hep C. I followed the usual routine, but of course trying my best not to make him feel like some sort of lab rat. This man spoked no German, English or any other language I had to offer. We continued to communicate. He seemed quite content in the whole situation. In the end of it all he asked me to come back and visit him the next day. Communication is possible.
Examples 4 5 6 7..
Were all people who left a mark on my day. It's amazing what you see and who you stumble upon. What is even more amazing is when you can stop and think about what these things really mean. We don't think as much as we should. We are ignorant and we ignore more circumstances that are not our own.
After it all.
I wasn't tired or hungry.
I was happy.
I felt like I made some sort of impact on their day, just as they had made an impact on mine.
Outside it was as perfect as I had left it.
I continued to walk home.
Bought flowers on the way.
Enjoyed my walk, the chaos, the calmness, the people.
I do love Freiburg.
It was the day I needed, to put me back in the right mindset.
Happy July.
